Hair Coloring

Tones chosen for you, not off a chart

Color is the service most worth getting right and the easiest to get wrong on holiday. At our two Uluwatu salons and in Ubud we read your face shape and skin before we choose a single tone. Four coloring services, and this page is where you work out which one you actually want.

Four ways to color, and how to choose

Artisan Hair Coloring is full color, the whole head taken to one shade. Re-Growth is the root touch up, the first 2 to 3 cm only, blended back into color you already have. Day Blending is highlights and balayage, lightness painted in by hand. Day Lighter is the full bleach, for going properly blonde rather than lighter. If you are not sure which of the four you want, send a daylight photo on WhatsApp and we will tell you.

The hair dye consultation comes first

Before picking a color we need to know your face shape and skin condition. We select tones that enhance your natural features, which is why we ask questions and look at you in daylight before anything is mixed. A shade that suits the person in the photo may do nothing for you. That consultation is what you are really booking when you look for a hair dye specialist rather than a hair dye salon: professional hair dye is only as good as the reading that comes before it.

Color made for this climate

Bali is hard on color. Sun lifts it, salt water dulls it, chlorine shifts it green, and hard water leaves a mineral cast that reads as brassy within weeks. We factor all of that into the formula and into where we place the color, so it fades the way you would want rather than all at once. Every basin runs advanced filtered water, and our products are sulfate-free and paraben-free.

Grey coverage that reads as hair

Solid, opaque grey coverage is what makes colored hair look colored. We tone so that some variation stays in it and it reads as hair rather than as a flat block, and we choose the depth against your skin rather than off a chart. Mention grey when you message so we allow the right amount of time.

Send a photo before you book

Message us on WhatsApp with a daylight photo of your hair as it is now, and tell us what has been on it before: box dye, henna, a previous bleach. It changes what is possible, and we would rather tell you honestly up front than halfway through. Color correction is something we do, but it needs planning and an honest look first.

FAQs: Hair Coloring: the honest answers

How long should you wait between hair colors?

For roots, four to six weeks is normal. For anything that lifts the hair, longer, and it depends on condition rather than the calendar. If we think your hair needs time before the next service we'll say so, and we'll tell you what to do in the meantime.

How long does hair coloring take?

Usually two to three hours depending on length and what we're changing. Big lifts and corrections take longer. We'll tell you honestly when you send a photo.

Will you color hair that has box dye or henna on it?

Tell us before you book. Both react unpredictably with salon color, and henna especially can rule some services out. We'd rather assess a photo first than surprise you in the chair.

Do you do color correction?

Yes, and it's one of the more common things we're asked for here. It needs an honest assessment first, because how far we can take it in one sitting depends on what's already on the hair. Send a daylight photo on WhatsApp.

Can I have a haircut and color in the same visit?

Yes, and it's the sensible order: color first, cut after, so the shape is cut into the finished color. Tell us both when you book so we hold enough chair time.

How do I stop my color fading in Bali?

Rinse with fresh water before and after swimming, use sulfate-free shampoo, and wash in the coolest water you can stand. Our Mermaid Gloss Keratin also holds tone and kills brassiness if you're blonde.
