Hair Extension Care

Washed properly, around the bonds

Extensions need washing differently: around the bonds, never dragged, and rinsed in water that will not leave residue at the roots. Tape in, clip in, weft and bonded, at all three Day salons.

Hair washed downward at the basin, the way extensions have to be

How to wash hair with extensions, and where it goes wrong

Most extension damage happens at the wash basin. Product worked into the bonds loosens them. Hair piled on top of itself at the crown tangles at the join. Then the tangle gets brushed out roughly afterwards and takes hair with it. We wash downward, keep product off the attachment points, and detangle from the ends up. It is not complicated, it is just done slowly, and it is why extensions last the length of time you paid for.

Tape in, clip in and bonded, each handled differently

Tape in extensions hate oil and conditioner near the tape, so we keep both to the mid-lengths and ends. Clip ins come out before washing and are washed separately, which is the part most people at home skip. Bonded and weft extensions need the water running downward and the roots handled without scrubbing. Tell us the type when you book so the stylist knows what they are working with.

Filtered water matters even more

Extension hair cannot renew itself the way your own hair does, so mineral build-up from hard water stays in it. Advanced filtration keeps both the extensions and your own hair from going dull and gritty, which is the usual reason extensions start looking older than they are.

Styled without cooking the bonds

We keep heat away from the attachment points and style through the lengths, so the join is not being weakened every time you have your hair done.

Salt, chlorine and Bali

Swimming in extensions is fine as long as they are rinsed properly afterwards, and rinsing with fresh water before you get in helps more than people expect. Salt and chlorine sitting in the bonds all afternoon is what shortens their life here.

FAQs: Hair Extension Care: the honest answers

How often should hair extensions be washed?

Less often than your own hair, and always properly. Two or three times a week is plenty for most types. Over-washing loosens bonds faster than almost anything else.

How do you wash hair with tape in extensions?

Shampoo at the scalp only, downward, keeping conditioner and oil to the mid-lengths and ends so nothing softens the tape. Never pile the hair on top of your head, and detangle from the ends up once it's out.

Can you wash clip in extensions?

Yes, but take them out first and wash them separately rather than wearing them into the shower. Bring them in with you and we'll do it properly.

Can you wash synthetic hair extensions?

Gently, in cool water, and they don't take heat afterwards the way human hair does. Tell us they're synthetic when you book, because it changes both the wash and the styling.

Can you wash extensions I had fitted elsewhere?

Yes. Tell us the type when you book so the stylist knows what they're working with.

Do you fit extensions as well?

Message us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what we can do at your nearest salon and what we'd refer out.
